LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - Firefighters have contained a fire at the North Courtland Police Department on Davis Street.

It's a mobile-home-style office building that also serves as the town hall.

North Courtland's mayor and police chief are on the scene to assess the damage. The facility is considered to be a loss.

Authorities say passersby saw flames coming from the building around 3:30 a.m. and called 911.

20 firefighters from North Courtland, Courtland and Town Creek responded to find flames shooting through the roof and out of the side of the facility.  Crews were able to contain the fire in about 90 minutes and are now working to put out hot spots.

We're told the fire started in the middle of the building.

Crews used a tanker truck to bring in water from about a mile away because of no nearby fire hydrants.

This is not the first time fire has destroyed this facility. It also happened ten years ago at a previous location.
