ATHENS, Ala. – Authorities confirmed a person died in a multiple-vehicle wreck in Limestone County on Tuesday.

The City of Athens and Utilities sent a message that Hwy 31 southbound near Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road was blocked due to the crash.

Athens Fire-Rescue and Athens Police Department responded to the crash.

Authorities said multiple vehicles were stopped at a red light when the driver of an SUV rear-ended a compact car with two occupants and shoved it into the next car in line.  The middle car was forced left into the median while the SUV and a sedan spun to a stop in the southbound lanes of Hwy 31.

Athens police said firefighters worked quickly to remove two women from the middle vehicle and help them.  The driver of that vehicle died of injuries sustained in the collision and her passenger was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the SUV was taken by ambulance for treatment. The driver and passenger in the front sedan miraculously escaped injury though all three vehicles were totaled.

Authorities said traffic was routed on Roy Long Road or allowed to turn back north on Hwy 31. The road has since reopened.

Any witness who has not yet provided a statement is asked to call Athens Police Department at 256-233-8700.
