IUKA, Miss. (AP) – Authorities say a man has been killed and a police officer injured after an exchange of gunfire inside a Walmart store in northeastern Mississippi.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain tells The Associated Press the incident began Sunday evening as a traffic pursuit. He says officers from the Iuka Police Department were following a man who bailed out of his car and ran inside the Walmart.

Strain says the officers followed and the man opened fire. Officers returned fire, killing him.

One officer was taken to a hospital for a minor injury and has since been released. No bystanders were injured.

Strain says the man has been identified as 34-year-old Howard Brent Means Jr. of Tishomingo, Mississippi. An autopsy will be performed, and the MBI is investigating.
