TANNER, Ala. – One person was killed, and another injured in a wreck south of Athens on Tuesday afternoon.  An 18-wheeler hauling logs collided with a delivery van at the intersection of Highway 31 and Huntsville Brownsferry Road in Tanner just before 1 p.m.  The intersection reopened to all traffic at about 8 p.m.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson the driver of the van, Clyde Paul Crawford, died at the scene. Crawford, 68, lived in Lacey’s Spring.

The driver of the log truck, John Lawson Oden, was flown to Huntsville Hospital.  Oden, also 68, lives in Somerville.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including Alabama State Troopers, Athens Police and Athens Fire and Rescue.  The log truck spilled logs all over the highway, and investigators spent hours mapping the scene.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said the log truck was headed south on Highway 31 and collided with the delivery van, which was headed east on Huntsville Brownsferry.  The driver of the log truck was flown to Huntsville Hospital.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Traffic was blocked at the intersection of Highway 31 and Brownsferry Road for several hours.  It was finally reopened around 8 p.m.
