ATHENS, Ala. – WHNT News 19 has heard from Athens Utilities customers that power was restored overnight after an outage involving 14,500 customers.

Athens Utilities crews began work to restore power before 11 PM.

Athens Police said a piece of equipment failed at the Peach Orchard substation off Nick Davis Road late Friday night. City officials say crews were working to make repairs to the lightening arrestor on a main transformer that failed and caused the loss of three substations.

We know there was also at least one traffic accident at a traffic signal not working on Hwy 72 and East Limestone Road. A witness on the scene said state troopers are on the scene and there are no injuries.

Be sure to treat any non-working traffic signals as 4-way stops.
