ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said a grandmother told authorities her granddaughter, 5-year-old Aubree Leondra Kirby, went missing at 5:15 p.m. Thursday. Aubree and two other children were playing on the playground at Bonnie Doone Apartments on Sanderfer Road.

“One of the children was going to town and asked Aubree if she wanted to go,” Johnson said. “She went and asked her grandmother who told her no, but Aubree went back and said she had permission to go.”

When Aubree’s grandmother began to miss her, a first grader said she saw Aubree get into a red car with rust.

“This first grader did a remarkable job of providing us details about what she saw and the car,” Johnson said.

Johnson called in extra officers, asked the city’s public information officer to send out alerts and a media blast with Aubree’s photo, and called about getting search dogs.

“Officers found a car matching the description at Wal-Mart,” Johnson said. “When the owner was located, she told officers that Aubree was at a friend’s home, which is where we found her. We are glad she is safe. I want to thank all the media for getting her photos out quickly and to citizens who shared her photo from Facebook and Twitter.”
