ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Saturday, September 6th, the Albertville Police Department is giving women something they’ve been asking for for quite some time: a free women’s only self-defense class.

It’s the first time they’ve offered such a class and it has been very popular.

The training instructor said even if the class fills up, the department is taking down names for a waiting list of people to get into the class if others don’t show up for some reason.

They’re already taking names for the next class because this is been so popular.

It’s been in the works for a few years, since so many women have been asking for it.

But it’s not due to any kind of spike in crime.

There’s still time to sign up for the class. Click here for the Albertville Police Department Facebook Page, where you’ll find more information.

The class is set for Saturday morning at 9:00 at the Albertville Elementary School gym.

Participants must be at least 16 years of age. Anyone 18 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Participants will be asked to pay $20 for the training manual, but there is no cost to register for the class.

Sign up by calling Sgt. Dave Haun at 256-891-8273.

The class is an unarmed self-defense class, although Haun says the trainers will answer any questions people may have about weaponry.

Haun added the department is discussing another self-defense class that would include use of weaponry, but that hasn’t been set up yet.

Since this class is for women only, Haun said no men will even be allowed into the building.
