Decatur, Ala. (WHNT) - This week's Tools for Teachers award recipient is a 16 year veteran 5th grade teacher at Frances Nungester Elementary in Decatur. Annie Diaz received WHNT's surprise classroom visit telling her about this recognition as well as 319 dollars to spend on teaching tools as she sees fit.

Ms. Diaz was nominated for this honor by Kisha Barrett, a grateful mother who wanted to express her appreciation for the impact Ms. Diaz's hard work has had on her child.

"She [Ms. Diaz] has a gentle essence, well- rounded qualities, and a dedicated drive for learning that rubs off on each student she teaches," Barrett told WHNT in her nomination letter.

Ms. Diaz says in order to properly educate a child, you must first ensure all their basic needs are being met outside the classroom, and she wants her kids to know from the get-go that she will always be looking out for them.

"I always start the year explaining to my students that we are family, and that we will treat each other like a family; we will take care of each other," Diaz tells us.
