MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) - This year's first recipient of WHNT's Tools for Teachers award is Cheryl Campbell, a third grade teacher at Mill Creek Elementary School. She was nominated for this honor by Kandace Butler, mom to one of Mrs. Campbell's former students. Butler wanted to say thanks for helping her daughter love school again, and we obliged by surprising Mrs. Campbell in her classroom with 319 dollars to spend on educational tools as she sees fit.

Mrs. Campbell tells us that her approach to education takes the modern philosophy of helping kids teach and learn from each other.

"They learn a lot from their peers," says this 11-year veteran teacher, "so, it's more about the teacher facilitating the learning of the knowledge rather than just giving all the knowledge to them."

And what does it mean that a mom wants to say thanks for the impact on her daughter's life?

"Whenever I see those students I had in the past.. that I made a difference in their lives.. that's why I teach!"

If you know a worthy teacher, coach, principal, or aide, tell us about them through the Tools for Teachers nomination form.
