MADISON, Ala. — Pools are starting to fill up again as the summer begins. But before you jump back in, pools and water parks want to make sure you’re taking precautions against water illnesses.

WHNT News 19 is taking action to show you one that you need to look out for. Though it may seem obvious, there’s one thing you need to especially keep in mind this summer.

“Making sure not to swallow the water. You can get recreational water illnesses,” warns Molly Frankenberg.

Frankenberg is the Aquatics Director for the Hogan Family YMCA. Some water illnesses can survive for days, even in chlorinated water.

“One of them is crypto. It does last in the pool, that’s why we do the precautions that we do,” she said.

Crypto causes serious gastrointestinal issues that can last for up to two weeks. And, it spreads easily, especially in shared pools, play areas, and water parks.

“Go see your doctor and then you need to make sure you stay out of the water, because then it will contaminate it and cause other people to have it,” said Frankenberg.

Your doctor will recommend how long you’ll have to stay out of the water. Frankenberg said they work hard to inform visitors of prevention methods.

“Making sure you are wearing a swim diaper if you’re not potty trained. Making sure you’re not going to the bathroom in the pool, cleaning off before and after pool use, and eating,” she explained.

One way you might not even realize you could contribute to crypto’s spread is changing diapers by the pool. Frankenberg said it’s important to always use the facilities correctly.

“We do have our diaper changing area for family facilities, at any pool they have that. Make sure you’re not doing that in or near the water. By doing that you’ll spread diseases and stuff like that,” she explained.

The first symptoms of crypto can show up anywhere from 2 to 10 days after a person is first infected. They include stomach cramps, an upset stomach, and other gastrointestinal issues.
