HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The streets of Huntsville were lined with red, white and blue Tuesday morning as the crowd cheered on our nation’s heroes at the annual Huntsville Veterans Day parade.

“I’d like to thank them for trying to keep our country safe,” said 11-year-old Huntsville resident Kayla Smith.

U.S. Army veterans Walter Ford and Walter Berry say they appreciate the city coming together to show support for the troops. But for them, the best part about the parade is getting to reunite with their band of brothers.

“It’s great, you see a lot of guys you were in the service with,” said Ford.

“I like to think back on the training and the stuff that we did… we hated it while we were crawling through the mud, bullets flying all around our heads. It was very hard, taxing, but it’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,” Ford added.

Berry said he came to the Veterans Day parade with a special message.

“Young people, join the service because freedom is not free,” Berry said.
