    LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A woman is recovering in Athens Hospital following a wreck just west of Athens city limits. Alabama State Troopers say just after four Sunday evening,  the driver of a red Nissan hydroplaned and lost control on Highway 72. Troopers say the car crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided with a box truck toting a carnival lemonade stand on a trailer.   • House on Mariposa Road in Huntsville damaged by fire

    HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Fire & Rescue was called to put out a fire at an unoccupied home. Huntsville fire crews tell WHNT New 19 that the fire started in one of the back bedrooms of the home in the 3500 block of Mariposa Road. No one was home at the time. Neighbors called 911 to report the fire. A third of the house has fire damage, while the rest of the home has smoke damage.

  • Austin Police Department reluctant to provide body cameras to officers

    AUSTIN, Tex. (WHNT) – After several recent police shootings involving unarmed suspects, the Austin, Texas police department isn’t so quick to  jump on the band wagon and supply their officers with body cameras. Officials in Austin say the cameras require a major policy change and need study and debate. They also voiced concerns over privacy issues for officers, suspects, victims, and witnesses.   • 24-year-old NFL star retires after one year: Fears head trauma

    (WHNT) –  Establishing yourself as a millionaire and playing for the San Francisco 49ers before the age of 25 doesn’t sound too bad, huh?   • Police: Shots Fired into Huntsville apartment

    HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) – Huntsville Police say they responded to a domestic dispute just before 9 PM Sunday night. It happened at Patton Road Apartments on the corner of Foster Avenue and Patton Road. Police believe someone fired shots into one of the apartments. When WHNT News 19 was on the scene, police were marking evidence outside the apartment. Investigators were inside the apartment, too.  Authorities say bullets did not hit anyone.   • Fire destroys home in Florence

    FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – Fire officials in Florence have declared a family’s home a total loss after a fire broke out Saturday afternoon. That house was on Lelia Street near Royal Avenue in the Seven Points area. Crews tell WHNT News 19 one person was home at the time the fire started. No one was injured. The Fire Marshall is looking into the cause of that fire.

  • Homes lose power after 18-wheeler downs utility lines

    COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Utility crews spent the afternoon restoring power to homes in Colbert County. A tractor trailer took down a utility line on River road near Shady Lane. It initially appeared as though the driver of the truck veered of the road, hitting a pole. A few homes lost power but no one was hurt. State Troopers are investigating the wreck.

  • UPDATE: Police ask for tips about wreck on Stringfield Road that killed 1, hurt 3 others

    HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A car wreck on Stringfield Road near the intersection with Highway 53 killed 47-year-old Riccardo Jimmere Haley on Sunday evening. Emergency crews also had to rush three others to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.  Two of those were juveniles; Jimmere Haley’s 14 and 16-year-old boys were passengers in the vehicle.   • Woman’s house on Mountain Gap Road heavily damaged by fire

    HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)-  Huntsville fire crews battled a fire on Mountain Gap Road near Brandywine Drive Sunday afternoon. It’s a two-story brick house, and fire crews believe the fire began on the first level near the garage.  A fire investigator is still looking into how it got started.
