Boy released from hospital after boat fire at Point Mallard Park in Decatur

DECATUR, Ala. – Four people were safely evacuated after emergency crews responded to a single-boat fire in Decatur.

ALEA Patrol Commander Capt. Gary Buchanan confirmed that the mast of the sailboat made contact with the power lines that cross Flint Creek near Point Mallard and caught on fire.

Authorities say an 11-year-old boy from Trussville was injured and transported to Huntsville Children’s Hospital for medical attention. The sailboat sustained fire damage. Saturday, Buchanan said at last report he was being released from the hospital on Saturday.

The fire happened around 3:30 p.m. with Decatur Police, Decatur Fire & Rescue, Morgan County Rescue, ALEA, and EMS responding.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol is investigating the incident.
