Disbarred Alabama lawyer gets jail for stealing client funds

JASPER, Ala. (AP) — A disbarred Alabama lawyer has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for stealing client funds.

Al.com reports 67-year-old Garve Ivey Jr. was sentenced Monday, having pleaded guilty to felony theft of property in February. Authorities say Ivey would settle client cases, pocket the settlement money and not tell the client what happened.

Ivey was disbarred in 2011 over investigations into allegations of misappropriated client funds. He was indicted on the theft charges in 2012 and 2013.

Ivey was previously ordered to pay about $381,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced Monday to serve three years of probation upon his release.
