Police identify wounded officer in Birmingham shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Police in Alabama have released the name of the officer who was wounded in a shooting earlier this month that left another officer dead.

Birmingham police say 27-year-old Officer Lucas Allums has been released from a hospital after spending nine days in the intensive care unit.

Allums was wounded and 44-year-old Sgt. Wytasha Carter was killed as they investigated possible car break-ins Jan. 13.

Allums is a patrol officer who has been with the department since 2016.

Two suspects were arrested. One of them is 31 years old and is still in the hospital after being wounded by another officer.

An 18-year-old suspect taken into custody at the time was released last week without any charges being filed.

Investigators are still looking for another possible suspect.
