BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) An Alabama mother is accused of kidnapping her children from their guardian at gunpoint.

Citing a release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, news outlets report that 27-year-old Derick Irisha Brown was formally charged with kidnapping, second-degree assault and other counts on Monday.

Deputies learned that 5-year-old twins and a 2-year-old were taken from a relative the morning of July 13. Authorities say Brown pointed a gun at the relative when she tried to stop Brown.

The girls had been taken from Brown the night before as part of a safety plan while an abuse investigation was ongoing.

The children were found with Brown at a Fairfield hotel on Friday afternoon. She was arrested after a vehicular pursuit and the children were recovered unharmed.

It’s unclear whether she has a lawyer.
