Huntsville Police releases traffic report to show top three reasons behind traffic accidents in 2016
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The road can be a dangerous place. In 2016 8,925 accidents happened in the streets of Huntsville.
211 resulted in injuries; 25 in death.
Lt. Stacy Bates says three things are to blame:
- Following too closely
- Failing to yield the right of way
- Distracted driving.
All three are equal problems in their own way. Bates believes following too closely and distracted driving kind of go hand-in-hand. Officers aren’t sure they’re going to be able to fix the problems.
But, Bates says, yielding the right of way just takes a little bit of patience.
“If you’re pulling out of private property onto a public roadway, whether it be from a shopping center, store or wherever, you’re required by law to make a complete stop before entering the roadway,” said Lt. Bates.
Three seconds of being completely stopped could prevent you from becoming just another tally.
Nearly 9,000 wrecks in 2016 is thousands too many. HPD Officers are crossing their fingers for lower numbers in 2017.
“We hope that maybe stepping up our enforcement a little more, and adding this tool of educating the public a little bit- every opportunity we can, at the end of the day it’s going to reduce accidents, we’re hoping,” said Lt. Bates.
