Victims identified in double shooting, investigation underway in Lawrence County

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. - The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office is investigating a double shooting at the Lawrence County Recycling Diesel Repair Shop that happened around 3 p.m Tuesday.

Captain Tim McWhorter with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office confirmed that two people were shot. One victim was air lifted by helicopter to an area hospital; the other was taken to Lawrence Medical Center for treatment.

The two men were identified as Keith White, who works at the diesel shop, and Joel Mayfield, who lives in the immediate area.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell said that it appeared to investigators that the two men were involved in an altercation and were both shot with the same weapon.

According to the Sheriff, one of the men was shot in the upper shoulder, the other man was shot in the groin.

Investigators recovered a gun at the scene. At this time, they are not sure who it belongs to.
