TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (al.com) - Jonathan Allen's big week continued Thursday in Atlanta.
The defensive end became Alabama's first winner of the national defensive player of the year, claiming the Chuck Bednarik Award at the College Football Awards Show. Allen didn't realize the Crimson Tide had never won this honor before.
"It's amazing," Allen said. "It's surprising."
The other two finalists were Michigan's Jabrill Peppers and Texas A&M's Myles Garrett. Temple's Tyler Matakevich won the 2015 version of the Bednarik.
This wasn't always easy for the senior from Virginia.
