HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Thanksgiving is not too far away. It's a time for families to come together and enjoy a meal. A local non-profit is hoping to take that concept to a whole new level. One Table is a city-wide Thanksgiving potluck that is open to everyone.
A busy downtown street will become the setting for something special in November.
"What we plan to do is close off the street from the intersection of Northside Square and Westside Square to Southside Square and put one big table down the middle of the street," explains Causeway Huntsville board member Les Tillery.
By combining food and fellowship, the goals are to remove barriers and bring people together.
"What we want to do is bring together a community wide Thanksgiving potluck," says Tillery. "It will be sort of a mashup of all different types of people. You might have business executives from downtown sitting across the table from somebody from the homeless population."
Causeway Huntsville is planning the One Table event, which has never been done before here. Still, Tillery says they're expecting a crowd.
"Causeway is going to provide the turkey, dressing and drinks," says Tillery. "So we're going to have enough of that to feed 500 people."
They'll need a lot of food and supplies which made WHNT NEWS 19's Pay it Forward of $319 very timely.
"That is awesome!" says Tillery. "Thank you very much!"
WHNT NEWS 19 went to the Star Market in Five Points to do some shopping right away. Tillery scooped up some plates, plastic utensils, and napkins. He checked out, paid and had plenty of Pay it Forward cash leftover to use as he and other organizers prepare to bring One Table to the Rocket City.
One Table is November 21st, the Monday before Thanksgiving from 11:30am-1:30pm. Causeway Huntsville is asking people to bring their own side dishes and an open mind.
