KILLEN, Ala. -Just after 6:30am,  US Marshals and Lauderdale County deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a room in the Super 8 motel.

Officials say the man fired shots through the motel room door. As he tried to escape out the back, deputies and agents surprised him and gunshots were exchanged.

Authorities have spent hours working to get the man in the room to surrender. Officials say he now faces two charges of attempted murder for opening fire on the deputies. He has felony arrest warrants out of Lee County, Florida.

Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Richard Richey says the man poses a threat to the community.

"He is a danger. He has already fired shots at the officers when they came to pick him up, the charges he has got out of Florida lets us know that he is a pretty dangerous man and we are not leaving until the situation is resolved," said Chief Deputy Richey.

SWAT team members from Madison County and Huntsville were called in this afternoon to relieve SWAT teams from Florence and Muscle Shoals.

Authorities believe at least one other person is in the room with the wanted man, possibly more. At this time, it's unclear whether any additional people are there willfully.

Officials evacuated the motel earlier this morning, as well as the marina directly across Shoal Creek for safety reasons.
