BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – According to our news partners at AL.com  five people have been taken to the hospital after a deck collapse in Vestavia Hills.

Students were attending a birthday celebration at a home in the Sterling Ridge Subdivision. Firefighters from Vestavia Hills, Hoover, and Rocky Ridge fire departments responded to the scene Saturday around 6:30 p.m. Multiple ambulances were also on hand.

According to Fire LT.  Ryan Farrell, 15 to 20 people were on the deck when it collapsed and dropped 15 feet.

At least two patients were taken to UAB Hospital, one with serious injuries. Three others were taken to other hospitals with broken extremities, cuts and bruises.

Fire officials say they’re thankful it wasn’t worse. “We could have had 20 serious injuries or 20 fatalities,” says Farrell.

Students who attended the party said they were too distraught to talk about the accident.

The investigation will be turned over to building inspectors.
