HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Huntsville Police say they are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place at a Marathon gas station at the corner of Bailey Cove Road and Willowbrook Drive around 3:00 a.m.

Officers responding to an alarm call discovered a burglary was in progress.  There was broken glass in the front of the building and a man inside of the store.

Officers say the man ran out of the store with what appeared to be a gun in each hand pointed at the officers.

According to investigators, officers fired their weapons and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident.

A spokesman for Huntsville Police wasn’t able to tell us how many officers opened fire, or if the suspect actually had a gun in his hand.

Police say that the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation and the findings of an Incident Review Board.

Too Close for Comfort

Crime in your neighborhood is one thing, but it's different when it happens just across the street. Keith Mclaglen says he usually feels safe at his apartment complex off Bailey Cove Road, "that was the reason why we moved here," he says.

He says he heard the gunshots and immediately looked out his window. “I’ve never seen anything like that," says Mclaglen.

“After the shots were fired, probably 11 more police cars showed up in every direction possible," he says.

From his second floor window, Keith could also see at least one officer get emotional, following the incident.  “The police officer that was close to me was swearing and just had his hands, pacing, very distraught and I have a lot of respect for what these guys do especially in situations such as that," he says.

Keith hopes this is just an isolated incident, and isn't the new normal. “One that I will remember for quite some time," he says.

The shooting remains under investigation. As we learn more, we'll update you on air and online.
