Florence Police need citizens' help to solve a crime involving animal abuse. Investigators want to find the person who dumped a puppy in a bag on the side of the road Monday night.

The puppy survived, but is in rough shape. She is in the care of Florence Animal Hospital.  She suffered severe head trauma, as this Facebook video shows.

The puppy has been named Milagro, which means 'miracle' in Spanish.

Wednesday morning, animal shelter officials tell WHNT News 19 Milagro's swollen and damaged right eye was successfully removed. The veterinarian says her pain will decrease significantly now that the bulging eye is gone. She will remain at the hospital for a few more days, then will be fostered by a vet technician until she fully recovers.

Florence Police say the puppy was dumped in the 2700 block of Cole Avenue shortly after 7 p.m. Monday. A citizen saw a black man in a white Nissan Altima with no tag, and red undercarriage lights throw a bag out of his car window. The person noticed the bag moving, and opened it to find that it contained the small puppy.

The person helped the puppy and called police. Officers arrived and then called Florence Animal Control.

Police searched for the suspect throughout the night, but haven't been able to find him.

If you have any information about the man or the white Nissan Altima, please call Florence Animal Control at (256) 760-6431 or the Florence Police Department at (256) 760-6610. You can also submit a tip anonymously by texting “FPDTIP” plus your message to the number 274637.
