SCOTTSBORO, Ala. -- The city of Scottsboro is working with the local rescue squad to put a stretch of unused land and the closed National Guard armory to use.

A stretch of property off of Tupelo Pike in Scottsboro is unused, and it was donated to the city several years ago.

Council member Keith Smith had an idea that he brought to Mayor Melton Potter and the Council's attention.

"We don't have a need for it, so the idea that was brought to our attention was let's donate it to the Scottsboro Jackson County Rescue Squad and they could sell it as a fundraiser, because they're always in need of money and operation expenses," Mayor Potter explains.

The council has been going through that process these last several weeks. Now, plans are moving forward and the rescue squad and the city are working together to utilize another piece of property. "We were notified probably back last year that our armory was going to be closing down, our local armory, and it reverts back to the city of Scottsboro," Potter says, "So the Scottsboro Jackson County Rescue Squad came to us and asked that that property be donated to them to move their operations center."

It would give the rescue squad more space, inside storage, and the possibility of housing residents during the event of a disaster. "It's a great opportunity for them and a way for us to give back since the armory will be shutting down," Potter says.

City leaders say the armory could be reverted to the city in September. The council is expected to vote to donate the land to the rescue squad on Monday.
