HAZEL GREEN, Ala. - Hazel Green's second year head coach Will Wagnon will be the first to tell you his team doesn't have a true identity yet. "Each day we come out here I don't know what to expect or who's going to step up." Wagnon is still looking for that identity, and he hopes to find consistency. in 2015 the Trojans started the year losing three in a row, then won five straight before losing their final three. Coach hopes to have a less streaky team this time around. "We start our practices with a team period, a best on best team period, so it's kind of like going into the first quarter," Wagnon said. "We are trying to set our practice schedules up to help us to be more consistent during the season."
The players aren't see the need for that consistency as well, and senior Miles Battle thinks the team will get off to a better start now that it's more familiar with Coach Wagnon. "Having a new coach and new system was difficult. Knowing this year going into the season that we know what we want to do. Having been in the position where we've been successful, we know what it takes to get there."
If the team can figure things out, the 2016 Trojans have a chance to do something that's never been don at Hazel Green, make back to back trips to the postseason. A legacy the senior class wants to leave, and knows it can. "Our freshman year we didn't win a football game. Just being together and suffering, and then we experienced success together," Battle told WHNT. "We've all come together and we know what it takes."
Hazel Green kicks off the new season August 26 at home against Buckhorn.
