HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-- Thousands of people use Redstone Arsenal's gate nine for their morning commute. And getting through can be a headache. That's why Madison County leaders want to move the entrance.

"Forty-eight percent of the entire traffic going into Redstone goes through gate nine," said Madison County Commission Chairman Dale Strong.

Construction on Redstone Arsenal's gate nine is underway. The Madison County Commission met today to discuss their part in it.

"We're going to work to slide that entry point back some forty-three hundred feet. Madison County's already moved some forty thousand cubic yards of dirt, already completed," said Strong.

Strong said moving the gate back will create some much needed space for traffic flow.

"It's gonna open 565 lanes back up that, on some days they are backed up and it reduces it to about one lane so this is something we need to do," he said.

The Commission is teaming with other agencies on the project in order to make it better for everyone.

"Madison County, this commission, unanimously approved $500,000 dollars toward that project. It will make travel safer, it will make it faster, it will make it so more people can enter Redstone Arsenal, and hopefully we'll have more job announcements in the days ahead," he said.

The expanded gate nine will also be home to a new gateway at the arsenal.
