Alabama gives Maurice Smith his full release

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (al.com) - The SEC is now in control of whether former Alabama defensive back Maurice Smith can transfer to Georgia.

Smith, who graduated from Alabama on Saturday, formally applied to the SEC Wednesday morning for a waiver that would allow him to join Georgia as a graduate transfer and be eligible to play immediately, a source told AL.com.

Tide coach Nick Saban had previously said he wouldn't allow Smith to transfer to another SEC school. But Saban said Wednesday, "We have done everything that we can do institutionally to allow the conference to make the decision about whatever they decide is in the best interest of the conference and the SEC rules relative to Maurice Smith. So that is past us now. It is beyond us. We don't really need to talk about that anymore and I don't have any other comments to make about it."
