DECATUR, Ala. –  A spokesman with the Decatur Police Department said a man is in custody in connection to an afternoon bank robbery.

Melvin Lloyd Fails was arrested and charged with robbery in the first degree, a felony.

The robbery happened at 3:40 p.m. Monday at Bank Independent on Hwy 31 south.

Police said that bank employees reported that the suspect took an undetermined amount of cash and fled on foot. They were able to provide a description to police, who used a K-9 unit to search the area.

An officer found a man who matched the description of the suspect, Fails, at the Hardee’s located on Hwy 31 south, police said. From there, the K-9 unit confirmed the suspect by tracking his movements to the Hardee’s.

Police said Fails is also a suspect in another Bank Robbery at the Bank Independent location at 1425 Beltline Rd SW that occurred on July 5. He is also charged with robbery in the first degree in connection to that case.
