DOUGLAS, Ala. — In a community collaborative effort, the town of Douglas and retail home improvement store Lowe’s are partnering up to build a new ball field at the town’s sports complex.

The hot sun and dusty ground aren’t deterring Lowe’s employees and community members from getting out and working together to build a new ball field at Douglas’ sports complex. The town paid for the grading work. “Then Lowe’s came in, and was gracious enough to provide the labor and all of the material for the fencing,” says volunteer Doug Kubik, “So we have a third ball field for the Douglas Sports Complex.”

The project is part of a nationwide effort that involves Lowe’s company employees working to better their communities. “Lowe’s Heroes is a program that, it’s a company based volunteer program, that allows employees of Lowe’s to support the community improvement projects in their area,” says Lowe’s employee Kay Reeves.

All of the supplies are donated and volunteers are doing the work. “This field will support at least 250 families per week for at least nine months out of the year,” Reeves explains, “So it’s a huge impact on this community, and so Lowe’s is really excited about being able to participate in this.”

“This field will last 20 years, so we’re going to impact a whole bunch of people with this,” Kubik says.

The field should be ready to go by next season.
