HUNTSVILLE, Ala - Elizabeth Garcia of the Better Business Bureau is warning of a new ticket scam specifically targeting the musical "Hamilton".

If you are planning to attend the new Broadway hit "Hamilton", be careful, because scammers are taking advantage of the popularity of the play to sell fake tickets to unsuspecting consumers. The average price for a genuine ticket is more than $300, but scalpers are selling them for much more.

A recent report from USA Today cited counterfeit Ticketmaster ® tickets being sold in online marketplaces like Craigslist. Some scammers have gone to great lengths to make the fake tickets look like the real thing.

Here are some tips for safe ticket purchases:

  • Stick with ordering tickets from an established online ticket vendor rather than the secondary market
  • Check out the seller/broker. Look them up on to see what others have experienced. Check to see if they are a member of the National Association of Ticket Brokers
  • Know the difference between a ticket broker (a legitimate and accredited re-seller) and a ticket scalper (an unregulated and unlicensed ticket seller)
  • Check the ticket broker`s refund policy. Only buy from a ticket re-seller that provides clear details about the terms of the transaction
  • Always use a credit card so you have some recourse if the tickets are not as promised. Do not use cash.
  • Whether you buy from a ticket broker or an individual, check out the seats ahead of time. Most major venues will have a seating chart posted on their website. Always ask for section, row and seat number to avoid obstructed view seats or seats that do not exist.
