REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT)– The man believed to be struck by lightning during storms on Thursday has died, confirmed Redstone Arsenal Garrison spokesman Chris Colster on Friday.

Colster said the man died last night at about 11:30 pm in the hospital. The man’s injuries were likely caused by lightning, said Colster, noting the storm that was going on at the time. The man was airlifted to UAB’s Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit to be treated.

The official cause of death will be released when an investigation wraps, and right now the man’s name is not being released. Redstone Arsenal employees plan to provide that when they’re finished notifying family members.

The man worked for Eskola Roofing, a subcontractor of CCI, Inc, said Colster.

“We are very saddened at the loss of our Teammate,” said COL Tom Holliday, Garrison Commander, Redstone Arsenal. “We should all remember the family and friends during this time and rally around them.”

Colster said Thursday that the man was at work near Building 5681 at the time of his injury. He was believed to have been doing outdoor maintenance to the building.
