HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Huntsville Police Department will set up DUI checkpoints throughout the 4th of July weekend in various “hot spots” around Huntsville, police announced Thursday.

Police did not announce specific locations where the checkpoints will be.

They plan on enforcing all state DUI laws to help curb accidents and fatalities resulting from driving under the influence.

Here are some important safety tips police want drivers to know this holiday weekend:

  • Drivers should be very attentive and patient of slow-moving and standing traffic
  • Drivers should be aware of pedestrians and children in congested areas
  • Officers will be strictly enforcing laws pertaining to driving around barricades or cones
  • No drivers will be permitted to stop or park on roadways, highway shoulders or medians to view fireworks displays

So far this year, Huntsville Police have already investigated 12 fatal traffic accidents within the city limits.
