BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Authorities say a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy has been shot in the leg in southwest Birmingham.

Sheriff’s spokesman Randy Christian tells WBRC-TV the deputy who was shot Thursday evening did not suffer life threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

Christian says the deputy was trying to serve a drug search warrant at the time of the shooting. Christian says additional suspects barricaded themselves inside a home near the scene of the shooting.

Footage from local television stations showed a heavy law enforcement presence near the scene after the shooting.
