John Salter

MADISON, Ala. - Madison Police say John Salter  was riding on a skateboard when he was struck by a vehicle around 8:35 Thursday night.

The accident happened in the area of Old Madison Pike and Crestview Drive next to Dublin Park.

All lanes of Old Madison Pike were closed.

Police say the incident is still under investigation.

Salter was pronounced dead in the ER shortly after the accident.

Salter loved skateboarding, it was an outlet for him, friends said. He particularly enjoyed travelling down steep hills and never lost control, his friend Zerrin Moss told WHNT News 19 today.

"We’ve been skating around Madison for years, so to hear something like this happening is just insane, because, like I said, I’ve seen him hit hills that were 10 times as steep as the one that this incident happened on."

Salter was a 2014 graduate of Bob Jones High School and was considering going into the military, Moss said.

Moss said they've skated around Madison for years, without any problems. He said he never expected his friend's life to end while riding his board.

"He was almost a pro with it, so, it was really never anything we thought about, you know, like getting hit by a car, something like that. It’s just crazy man."
