Participant dies during Chattanooga IRONMAN 70.3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.  – According to CBS affiliate WDEF, an Iron Man official has confirmed the death of a participant in Sunday’s triathlon.

The athlete, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital after receiving medical attention.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our athletes participating in today’s IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga triathlon,” Iron Man public relations representative Ellie Seifert said in an official statement released to the media.

“The athlete required medical attention during the swim and was transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated. Our condolences go out to the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to support.”

According to a report from ESPN, there were 109 deaths in races between 1985 and 2015. Of those 109 deaths, 76 occurred during or while exiting the swim leg of the race.
