Russellville Wins 2nd Straight 5A State Title

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (al.com) - Russellville coach Chris Heaps had a goal for his baseball team during his first practice four years ago.

“I told them we are going to compete for championships,” Heaps said.

Book two for the Golden Tigers.

After losing the opener in the Class 5A championship series on Thursday, top-ranked Russellville stormed back to sweep Faith Academy 3-0 and 5-3 on Friday at Riverwalk Stadium and repeat as state champions.

“Our guys really responded today,” Heaps said. “Last night at the hotel, I told them, ‘Hey, we are – at the time – 46-7. If we were playing the odds, I would bet on us even though they have a really good team and a good record.’”
