ARAB, Ala. — Police say a man caught stealing from a home is facing charges and recovering from a gunshot wound after the homeowner shot him in the foot.

Arab Police say the incident happened at a home on Ruth Road. “The victim advised us that he received a call that someone was breaking into his residence,” Assistant Chief Shane Washburn says, “When he arrived at the residence, he found two male subjects there. One of the subjects had some of his property in his hands. The victim advised him to put the property down and he did.”

Police say when the homeowner looked in the thief’s vehicle, he told officers he saw more of his belongings. “So he advised him to stay there while he called the police,” Washburn explains, “During that time there was a brief altercation. The property owner discharged a firearm, and one of the suspects was shot in the foot.”

Police say the injured suspect left the home. Police found him about an hour later. “The suspect was wounded and he was taken to Marshall North and treated for his injuries,” Washburn said.

Officers say the second man went to the police department and talked with investigators. That person isn’t facing any charges and police are still working to find out how he was involved. Police identify the suspect who was injured as TJ Freeland, and say they come in contact with him often. “We’ve had multiple incidents involving him. He has been a suspect in other burglaries and he has been arrested in other burglaries,” Washburn says.

Freeland is facing a burglary charge. Police are not releasing the name of the victim.
