MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The State Treasurer’s Office of Alabama is having an online auction from its Unclaimed Property Division.

State Treasury receives items from safe deposit boxes from banks that have lost touch with their customers. It holds on to cash, stocks, bonds and more that typically come from financial institutions and businesses that lose contact with the valuables’ owners.

If the owners of the deposit box stop paying their dues and the bank loses contact after several years of searching for the owner, Alabama law allows their items to be auctioned.

The auction will start on Fridays and end on Wednesdays. Items in the auction include jewelry, coins, currency and so much more. In 2013, WHNT held a Taking Action line where we helped reunite people with their lost money and possessions. That day, $403,563 was claimed, including a single claim for $127,000!

To access the auction go to the Treasurer’s website and click on Unclaimed Property Auction.

The first auction is scheduled to start this Friday, April 22 at 10 a.m.
