Memphis Zoo Delivers Rare Baby Orangutan
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Zoo keepers in Memphis are celebrating a rare birth. They delivered via Cesarean section a highly endangered baby Sumatran orangutan.
A human obstetrician performed the C-section, with assistance from the veterinarian and animal care staff from the zoo. The baby boy is doing well and is being cared for by his mother Jahe. C-sections on orangutans are rare, and Jahe and her baby will be only the 9th in the world to survive such a delivery.
The Memphis Zoo is hosting a naming contest on the zoo’s website memphiszoo.org/orangutan starting April 14. The final name will be announced Friday, April 22 via the Zoo’s social media pages.
