Alabama Board of Education names interim Superintendent

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT)- The Alabama Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting April 14th in which board members discussed the next steps in selecting a State Superintendent.

Dr. Tommy Bice retired March 31st as the Alabama State Superintendent. Since his retirement, Juliana Dean has served as the proxy Superintendent.

On Thursday, board members selected Dr. Phillip Cleveland as the interim state superintendent.

The board also made the decision to set August 1st as their target date for selecting a permanent state superintendent.

Dr. Cleveland will not be in consideration for the permanent position because he is serving as interim.
