GRANT, Ala. -- Plans for a new recreation center in the town of Grant are at a standstill right now, but town officials are working to get them moving again.

For quite some time now the town of Grant has been working to turn the plans for a recreation center into a reality, but now those plans are halted. "We had a soil test done over there a few weeks ago, and the test came back that the soil wasn't suitable to put a building on," Mayor Larry Walker explains.

The plans are for the building to go in the town park where a swimming pool used to be. "The actual area where the pool was, we had backfilled that and compacted it and tested it, but the area where the apron of the pool was which is where part of the building was set on, all that was backfilled when the pool was actually first built," Walker says, "So it's come back that that soil wasn't suitable."

Other options were considered, like moving the site altogether, but Walker says keeping the site where it is and addressing the issues there is expected to be more cost-effective. "It will be less expensive to go back to the pool area, and also it's just a better location I think," Walker says, "Parking will be more suitable there.  It will look better in that area."

Current recreational facilities available to residents are mainly used in the warmer months, so the aim for this building is to give the town a facility to use year-round.

The town has the plans ready to go;  it's just a matter of remedying the site.  Town officials met with crews Wednesday to discuss how to best fix the soil issues at the site.
