FORT PAYNE, Ala. – A Fort Payne corrections officer died in a crash early Sunday morning.

Alabama State Troopers say Cody LeDale Wells, 23, died when the 2014 Ford Focus he was driving left the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree.

The single-vehicle crash happened at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, April 3 on DeKalb County Road 85, about one mile north of Fort Payne.

Troopers say Wells was not wearing a seat belt.  He died at the scene.  Troopers continue their investigation.

Friends have set up a gofundme account to support Wells’ fiancée and son.

This is video of Cody Wells from September 2015 when he surprised his brother at Fort Payne High School.  Wells had just returned home from military training.
