DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) - They're at it again, scammers targeting Decatur Utilities customers.

"Someone called one of our customers and they used a technology called 'spoofing,'" explained DU spokesman Joe Holmes.

The technology made Decatur Utilities' name pop up on the caller ID. Like many scams, the unknown caller demands instant payment, requesting credit card information over the phone.

Which, Holmes says, they will never do. He adds the scammers have generated and mailed out fake invoices, complete with a forged DU logo.

But nothing in terms of payment has changed.

"We send out a billing statement every month," said Holmes. "People know what that looks like, they know it's from us. We never call and demand you pay with a credit card or debit card over the phone."

Holmes says it's hard to trace the scammers who could be calling from anywhere in the world.

If you have any questions or something seems out of the ordinary, hang up and call Decatur Utilities directly  at 256-552-1400.  Most important of all, never give out personal information or credit card information over the phone.
