When you have a large tree in your yard, it’s tough to find plants that can compete in the same area. There are some that do very well, though.  One of those is the Hellebores or Lenten Rose. It’s a tough and durable plant.

The green foliage began growing back in January when the weather was still cold. Some flowers started to grow during that period of time, and they've continued to grow and will bloom through April. The blooms come in different colors. They range from pink, to white, to maybe even lime green. They’re seedlings and as a result you can’t tell what you’re going to get until you see it come up and bloom.

This plant is one that can tolerate drought and tolerate competition, but it needs shade. If it has too much sunlight it may grow, but the foliage won’t be as rich looking. If you have a shade area for a ground cover under trees or shrubs, try this Lenten Rose.
