HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a man suspected in an attack on his ex-girlfriend that severely injured her and killed her unborn baby has been taken into custody.

Media outlets report 29-year-old Christopher Ammons Kemp was arrested by Birmingham police early Wednesday.

Hoover police responded to an assault report at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Capt. Gregg Rector said the 28-year-old female victim was found walking near the roadway. She appeared to have significant injuries.

Investigators say the victim, who told them she was nearly seven months pregnant, was taken to a hospital for treatment. Detectives say the unborn baby did not survive.

Police say the victim identified her attacker as Kemp, her ex-boyfriend.

Kemp will be transported to Hoover City Jail, pending official arrest warrants. It isn’t immediately clear if he has an attorney.
