FORT PAYNE, Ala. – A man was shot in what police are calling a “domestic situation” in the parking lot of the Fort Payne Walmart Wednesday night.

Fort Payne Police say a 911 call was made to Fort Payne Police Department about a shooting that happened at Walmart Wednesday night.

Police say when officers arrived they found an armed man with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the store. The other party involved in the incident was also still at the scene.

Charles Taft Pope was taken to Dekalb Regional Medical Center for his injuries, and later air lifted to Erlanger Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery.

Police say the other subject was detained at the scene and transported to the Fort Payne Police Department. Officers say that person, who isn’t named, cooperated fully with the investigation.

The department says after interviewing that person and conferring with the District Attorney, no charges have been filed at this point.

Police say after interviews with the parties involved and witnesses, it appears the incident was domestic related.

The entire incident occurred outside in the parking lot of Walmart and was unrelated to the business itself or any employees.

The case is still under investigation.
