SPRINGVILLE, Ala. – Officials with the Alabama Department of Corrections say an inmate stabbed a correctional officer on duty at the St. Clair Correctional Facility early Monday.  The facility is in Springville.

The stabbing reportedly happened at 12:30 a.m. when officers were called to one of the prison’s cell blocks to break up a fight between two inmates. The officer was stabbed while attempting to detain the inmates.

The officer was treated at the prison’s infirmary and then taken to a nearby hospital.  He is expected to recover.

Corrections officers were secured the cell block and put the facility on lockdown as a precaution.

The Department of Corrections is not releasing the name of the officer, or suspect in the stabbing pending an ongoing investigation.
