MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. -- Voters in two of three Marshall County fire districts approved a fee to help fund local volunteer fire services, and now officials in those areas are looking to the next steps.
Voters in the Grant, Douglas, and Nixon Chapel fire districts were met with a local race all their own Tuesday -- fire district fees. The measure that would help fund volunteer fire departments in those areas was voted down in the Grant fire district. Douglas and Nixon Chapel fire districts voted yes.
Now, officials there are taking the next steps. "We have to submit a one, three, and five-year plan to the county Ccommission on where this money will be spent, and there's only certain things that it can be spent on, so we'll be working on that," Douglas Mayor Corey Hill says.
Hill says they would like to buy some new equipment and provide the volunteers more training with the funds. The department is also looking for new volunteers in addition to its other plans.
The fee is $5 per month, per household. It will be collected in property taxes. The money can only be spent for training and equipment, and it will be audited.
Hill says the hope the additions will benefit the department's ISO rating, which is a five. "We hope to go to at least a four and we're going to work toward that with this money," Hill says.
The fee will be applied starting in April, for the upcoming tax year.
This measure has been approved and voted down already in multiple other Marshall County fire districts.
