Mississippi gun store shooting

PEARL RIVER COUNTY, Miss. (CBS) – A gun shop owner and his son are now dead after a shootout in a Mississippi gun store with two customers.

According to investigators with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department, the altercation began Saturday afternoon after two men, also father and son, went to McLemore Gun Shop to pick up a weapon being repaired.

Pearl River County Sheriff David Allison says Michael McCool, 29, and his 52-year-old father Audy became agitated after being told that though their weapon hadn’t been fixed, they still had to pay a service fee.

Investigators tell WLOX the wife of the gun shop owner, who was at the counter, called her husband, Jason, and son, Jacob, to help with the building tension.

The father-and-son pairs argued over the $25 service charge, soon escalating from physical violence to gunfire, officials say.

Jason McLemore, 44, and his 17-year-old son were pronounced dead in their family shop, according to authorities. Authorities say the shop owner had an unholstered handgun by his side when he was shot but it’s unclear whether it was fired.

When deputies arrived, Audy McCool was walking around bleeding with what appeared to be a back wound but it has not been determined how he was injured. He was airlifted to a Hattiesburg, MS hospital. Michael McCool was airlifted to a New Orleans, LA hospital.

No charges have been filed at this time.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating the scene.
